Wat Phra Dhammakaya: a giant and controversial temple north of Bangkok

Located about 30 kilometers north of Bangkok, Wat Phra Dhammakaya stands out for its overwhelming scale, futuristic aesthetics, and controversial reputation.

A temple unlike any other

Wat Phra Dhammakaya isn’t your typical Bangkok temple. Visiting this site feels more like a trek through a monumental sci-fi set than a peaceful walk through sacred grounds.

Spanning over 320,000 square meters—the size of more than 30 football fields—the complex includes three major buildings: the Phra Mongkolthepmuni, the Memorial Hall, and the Great Assembly Hall. The latter resembles a massive aircraft hangar, reminiscent of the ones used to build Airbus A380s.

Golden saucers from another world

The Memorial Hall is the first structure visitors see. Its flying saucer shape immediately catches the eye—and it’s not alone. The Phra Mongkolthepmuni, similar in form but much larger, dominates the area.

From a distance, the golden dome atop the structure appears smooth. But upon closer inspection, you’ll find it’s made up of thousands of tiny golden Buddha statues, meticulously aligned to form a shimmering surface.

A strange, surreal atmosphere

Empty space and precision

Despite its vastness, the site feels oddly sterile. The polished white granite, huge empty plazas, precisely aligned trees, and mostly deserted halls create an eerie, impersonal ambiance.

Devotees in white

Most devotees gather under the Great Hall in small groups, each led by a monk. All participants—except the monks—are dressed in white. Their warm and welcoming smiles stand in contrast to the austere surroundings, though they seem slightly surprised to see an outsider.

At night: candles, chants and devotion

During major Buddhist ceremonies, the temple takes on a whole new energy. Thousands of candles are lit, and synchronized processions and chants turn the gathering into a surreal, almost cinematic experience.

Even for non-believers, the atmosphere is deeply immersive.

A controversial Buddhist movement

Wat Phra Dhammakaya has also made headlines due to multiple allegations of fraud and corruption. The temple’s spiritual leader has been the subject of repeated arrest attempts, but loyal followers have consistently blocked authorities.

The temple’s teachings emphasize donations as a path to spiritual merit, raising criticism about financial exploitation.
