Nai Lert Park: Bangkok’s Hidden Green Oasis and Floral Festival Landmark
Nai Lert Park is one of the oldest parks in the Thai capital. Still unknown to most visitors, it remains one of the most refined and pleasant places in Bangkok. Introduction.
A Park in the Shadow of a Festival
Most of the park’s visibility comes from the famous “Nai Lert Flowers and Garden Art” festival. Strangely, Nai Lert Park rarely appears in tourist itineraries or guides to Bangkok’s green spaces.
Perhaps its modest size and its discreet location between the towers of Chit Lom and Phloen Chit work against it. Yet this quiet presence is part of its charm, protecting it from crowds and noise.
The Story of a Park and a Family
If the park appears so finely accomplished, it is not the result of urban planners hastily trying to please ecological policies. Rather, the park is intrinsically tied to the story of one man, Nai Lert Phraya Bhakdinoraseth. Born in 1872, the son of an entrepreneur, he multiplied the family’s wealth through his forward-thinking and progressive ideas. While part of his vision was directed toward European modernity, another part remained firmly focused on preserving the culture and traditions of the great Kingdom of Siam.
The park and the house that visitors see today stand as living proof of this legacy.
A Park and a Museum
Indeed, although death struck this renowned man too soon, his legacy lived on. His family opened this private estate to the public, and since 2012 the house has become a museum where objects from the past bear witness both to a way of life and to a bygone era. The house is well worth visiting, as it is filled with finely crafted objects and rooms that showcase remarkable skill and refinement.
Exploring Nai Lert Park
Nai Lert Park covers only two hectares, yet its thoughtful design makes up for this modest size. Visitors can enjoy the refreshing atmosphere of the small pond, shaded by trees that have stood for centuries.
On one side, there is a shrine dedicated to Chao Mae Tuptim, surrounded by phallic symbols. Originally, it was erected by Nai Lert Phraya Bhadinoraset himself, as a tribute to the Chinese deity of prosperity, abundance, and fertility. The phalluses, or Palad Khik, still offered today bear witness to the persistence of this belief—especially striking when the shrine stands in the garden of a billionaire.
Around the Park
Not far from there stands a beautifully crafted wrought-iron pavilion, designed to host exhibitions or ceremonies. Two restaurants also take advantage of this setting: Ma Maison and Lady L.
The first, as its name suggests, is a French restaurant—elegant and chic. The second combines fine dining with more casual dishes such as pizzas. Prices at both restaurants are rather high, but they are perfect spots to enjoy a coffee and a sweet treat.
In any case, Nai Lert Park is a small refuge, a peaceful bubble in an otherwise dynamic and noisy district. It offers the perfect pause
